Rwanda Church Closings

Seventh Day Baptist (SDB) churches in Rwanda are facing a crisis due to stringent government regulations, resulting in the closure of 13 SDB churches, with 10 more still closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Despite these challenges, the community remains active, with families worshipping virtually or in small groups. To reopen, churches must meet new requirements including theological qualifications, larger plots, improved facilities, and safety measures, totaling an estimated US$28,000 for 13 churches.

The Rwanda Conference will contribute US$7,000, leaving a need for US$21,000 in additional support. This situation echoes a recent display of generosity at the 2023 sessions in Malawi, where funds were quickly raised for the Mozambique SDB Conference. The SDB World Federation, SDB General Conference in North America, and SDB Missions are calling on the global SDB community to unite to support our Rwandan brothers and sisters.

We encourage everyone to contribute in whatever way they can, whether individually or with your church. On October 5, 2024, SDB Churches around the world are encouraged to host a "Rwanda Sabbath" where this situation is highlighted, prayed for, and donations taken. Another option is to focus on this cause throughout the month of October. All resources sent to the Missionary Society will be transferred directly to the Rwanda Conference. The letter sent from the World Federation to Conference Leaders can be seen here.
