Rebuilding Hope: Church Reopenings in Rwanda

After more than three years of closure due to COVID-19, two Seventh Day Baptist churches in Rwanda have reopened their doors for worship. In partnership with the SDB Missionary Society, SDB World Federation, and SDB General Conference of USA & Canada, the Rwanda Conference completed extensive rehabilitation work to bring both buildings into compliance with national reopening standards. The first Sabbaths back in the buildings were marked with joy, music, and deep gratitude for God’s faithfulness.
The Ngarama SDB Church, located near the Uganda border, first opened in 2005 but had remained closed since 2020. On April 20, 2024, the congregation gathered again for its first worship service, celebrating God’s provision and the perseverance of His people. The Kinigi SDB Church, in the volcanic region near the DRC border, reopened two weeks earlier on April 6, 2024, after completing similar renovations. For both congregations, the reopening marked a new beginning after a long season of waiting and uncertainty.
Together, these projects represent a significant step forward for the SDB Rwanda Conference, which used funds provided through the Missionary Society and contributions from local believers to complete the restorations. While most Seventh Day Baptist churches in Rwanda remain closed due to increasing government requirements for worship facilities, these two openings serve as powerful symbols of perseverance and faith. They stand as reminders that God continues to build His church—even when progress feels slow.
Another source of encouragement has come through the training of Rwandan pastors. In response to new government education requirements for clergy, four pastors are currently enrolled in a one-year postgraduate theology program at Kibogora Polytechnic. They are now more than halfway through their studies, and their progress will help more churches meet reopening standards more quickly. This focus on education reflects the Conference’s commitment not only to physical restoration but also to spiritual and leadership renewal.
We are deeply grateful for the faithful support of partners whose prayers and resources make these steps possible. The ongoing prayers and support of our global partners continue to strengthen the spirit of renewal and hope among Rwanda’s SDB believers.
Reflection
Renewal rarely happens all at once. Like seeds planted in faith, growth takes time, patience, and perseverance. Scripture reminds us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). The story of Ngarama and Kinigi is a reminder that even when progress feels slow, God’s work continues to unfold in powerful and lasting ways.
Prayer Point
Pray for the churches and pastors in Rwanda as they continue rebuilding and meeting new requirements. Ask God to strengthen their faith, provide needed resources, and bring renewal to every congregation still waiting to reopen.
Reflection Question
Where might God be calling you to persevere in a slow season of growth—and how can you trust that His timing will bring renewal?
