The efforts to support the Jamaica SDB Conference in navigating the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa are ongoing and will continue to be addressed at multiple levels throughout the long recovery and rebuilding process.
The Jamaica Conference, under the leadership of President Kevin Carter, has been physically present in the most affected areas, and an assessment of all the damage and loss to church buildings and to the property of the SDB community is ongoing. The Conference has been able to distribute basic necessities and care packages in some locations, and is grateful for all donations received so far, in cash and kind.
How You Can Help
First of all, please continue to pray for all those affected. Pray for the Lord’s mercy, intervention, and provision in the recovery, restoration, and rebuilding process.
Immediate Needs:
Because much of the island's infrastructure was significantly damaged, immediate needs primarily include shipping supplies directly rather than sending money to purchase items on the ground.
If you can donate items and can have them personally shipped to Jamaica, please address them to Jamaica Seventh Day Baptist Conference, Inc., C/O Pastor Kevin Carter, 29 Charles Street, Kingston, Jamaica. The Conference can receive such items free of customs duties and consumption tax, but welcomes cash donations to help cover transportation expenses. This may be sent through the Missionary Society’s donation link below.
In the Toronto, Canada area, for shipping items, please contact Annette Murray of the Open Arms SDB Church at 416-997-2668.
In Florida, for shipping items, one contact is Tashani Fung Chung of the SDB Church of Fort Lauderdale at 954-695-8117. Please see this flyer for preferred items.
Long Term Needs:
The main need in the coming months will be rebuilding. In response, the World Federation, CSADR, and the Missionary Society will be collecting funds to help with rebuilding some of the damaged churches. A part of this funding will be allocated to immediate needs (such as the transportation of the goods listed above), but the majority will be used in the rebuilding process. Cash donations may be made to the SDB Missionary Society website by clicking the button below. You may also donate through the SDB General Conference by going to their giving site and selecting “SDBURF: Jamaica Hurricane Relief.”
Watch for more information on a specific rebuilding plan and fundraising goals for the damaged church structures. With the help of the Lord, through all of our efforts, may Jamaica continue to rise from this disaster.
