Please view the video below to receive updates from Jamaican SDB Conference President Pastor Kevin Carter.
When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica on October 28, it brought unprecedented devastation. The category 5 storm left widespread destruction across the western part of the island, damaging homes, destroying crops, and severely impacting communities. Seventh Day Baptist churches and families were among those deeply affected, with multiple church buildings damaged and many families losing roofs or entire homes. In the days that followed, we shared about both the urgent need and the incredible outpouring of support from the global church. That response has continued and is now bearing visible fruit.
A Continued Outpouring of Support
Building on the generosity highlighted in previous updates, the Jamaica Conference has now received over 50 shipments from overseas, along with ongoing financial contributions.
Support has come from New York City, Port St. Lucie in Florida, Canada, the UK Conferences, the Guyana Conference, and many individual donors. Multiple shipping containers were sent, and teams on the ground have sorted and distributed supplies through coordinated deliveries, especially to churches and communities in St. James and St. Elizabeth. This sustained response has ensured that relief has reached those most in need.
From Relief to Rebuilding
Efforts are now moving steadily into rebuilding. Plans and estimates are being finalized for repairs to the Bethsalem and Coker SDB churches in St. Elizabeth. The Jehovah Nissi Church has estimated repair costs of nearly J$1 million, or over US$6,000. Conference leaders are also prioritizing the order in which damaged churches will be restored to ensure the most effective use of resources. Beyond church buildings, families are being helped directly. Several homes have already been repaired, and one member whose home was completely destroyed is now receiving assistance to rebuild.
The Impact of Your Giving
Your generosity is making a measurable difference. Nearly US$50,000 has been collected through the SDB Missionary Society so far to support relief and rebuilding efforts, with US$40,000 already sent, including US$10,000 from the Committee on Social Action and Disaster Relief. These funds, along with the many shipments of supplies, have made it possible to respond quickly and begin long-term recovery work.
Please Continue to Pray and Give
Earlier estimates suggest that rebuilding the damaged church buildings alone will exceed US$100,000. The need remains significant, and the work is far from complete.
Please continue to pray for wisdom, endurance, and restoration for the churches, families, and leaders in Jamaica.
And if you are able, please continue to give. Your support is helping bring both practical relief and lasting hope in the name of Christ.
