Jamaica Hurricane Relief January Update



Hurricane Melissa caused widespread devastation across Jamaica, deeply impacting Seventh Day Baptist churches, families, and surrounding communities. Since the storm struck on October 28, leaders in Jamaica and partners across the global Seventh Day Baptist community have continued relief, recovery, and rebuilding efforts. Collaboration between the SDB World Federation, Missionary Society, General Conference of USA/Canada, as well as other conferences, has provided some immediate relief and started to pave the way for rebuilding.


What Is Being Done

  • Multiple shipping containers were sent from various sources for immediate relief.

  • Teams have sorted and prepared relief supplies from container boxes shipped from overseas and are distributing them to those in need

  • Almost US$40,000 has been collected to support the ongoing relief and rebuilding efforts

  • Funds already sent total US$20,000, including US$10,000 from CSADR. More will be sent soon.

  • Jamaica SDB Conference leaders have identified the most vulnerable church building and placed it first in line for restoration, and they continue coordinating relief and recovery efforts across affected communities

  • Leaders are establishing an order for restoring additional damaged church buildings to ensure the most efficient rebuilding process


How You Can Continue to Help

Earlier estimates indicated that rebuilding damaged Seventh-day Baptist church buildings will cost more than US$100,000. While shipped supplies remain important, long-term rebuilding will require continued prayer and financial support. Donations may be made through the SDB Missionary Society website by clicking the button below. You may also donate through the SDB General Conference by going to their giving site and selecting “SDBURF: Jamaica Hurricane Relief.” Funds given will support both ongoing relief needs and the rebuilding process.
