Special Projects - 2009
You can be a vital part in the work of the Missionary Society.
Prayerfully consider the following list of special needs:
*Bicycles for both the women in leadership and the pastors in most of our countries. These bicycles will cost from $200 to $400 depending upon the country. Countries included are: Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda.
*Medical supplies and medicines are needed for Rwanda, Liberia, Malawi, The Gambia, Ghana and The Cameroon.
*Many of our conferences have schools associated to their churches and they need funds to continue with this service.
*School supplies, books and equipment for many of our sister conferences and churches. The churches view education as the most important element that will bring their children out of poverty and the post-war trauma out of their country.
*Sewing supplies and material for many of our sister conferences.
*Bibles and study materials, including The Helping Hand, for our sister conferences and churches. Most of the churches have very poor libraries. They need books to teach their congregations and those around the church. Many of their pastors do not have a good Bible from which to teach.
*Children's Bibles in most of our sister conferences and churches. These Bibles cost from $1 to $9. Everyone wants a Bible they can call their own.
*Leadership materials and supplies for most of the sister conferences and churches. This includes the CALLED and TIME programs.
*Keyboards and other musical instruments for many churches in our sister conferences. These will cost between $400 and $800.
*Hymnals for the churches in most of our sister conferences and churches.
*Funds to support the translation and printing of literature used in outreach in most of our churches.
*Computers and printers for our churches and conferences. These will need to be purchased in the country in which they are to be used. The amount of duty taxes are great enough that you end up paying almost as much as it costs there anyway. Also, a place for repairs and upgrading is available when you purchase it in the country.
*Photocopiers for our churches. Advice same as the computer. Cost is at least $2,500.
*Scholarships for Makapwa Bible School. $500 per semester, per student.
*Funds for church building roofs in Rwanda. $200 to $300.
*Funds for building plots in many of our sister conferences and churches.
*Funds for the wives of the leaders to travel to the churches to teach the women.
*Funds to help the poor and children in many of our sister conferences and churches.
*Funds to help organize and develop the Women's Board in our sister conferences and churches. This will include sending a woman from the USA as the instructor/mentor. This is a new program and we are not sure of the cost. We have had many requests for this service, especially from the newer developed conferences and churches. They want to be able to operate their Women's Board as well as we do ours.
*Funds to help support the ministries in church projects in the USA. This would include outreach, education of pastor in relationship to our denomination polity and beliefs, and help in rent or salaries.

Some answers from Haiti
This update from Pastor Andrew Samuels, Miami:
At 4:24 this afternoon (Monday), I was finally able to have an extended telephone conversation with Pastor Jean Lucas Julien, Pastor of the SDB Church in Haiti. The conversation was facilitated by the multi-lingual translation skills of Dr. Romulus Honore, a Haitian Medical Doctor living in Miramar, Florida, and who has accompanied me on most of my trips to Haiti.
There is no physical harm or loss of life to his immediate family, or Church family. So far however, he is aware of a cousin and a niece who have died as a result of the earthquake. In addition, 9 Church members have suffered the loss of relatives, several more have had homes destroyed, the school he operates and the temporary Church structure have been destroyed, and his house is damaged. He and his family have been sleeping outdoors because of the potential danger of more tremors.
The food situation is critical. They do not have food readily available, and there is no certainty about the next meal. There is nothing normal in and around the city of Port-au-Prince.
Pastor Julien confirmed what I suspected, which is that at present there is no way for us to get anything to him - neither supplies, nor money. We will simply have to wait for the ways and means for such avenues to open up. That is of course indefinite, and adds to the agony of the crisis.
We must continue to be in prayer.

SDB Connections in Haiti
From Pastor Andrew Samuels, Miami SDB Church:
Both the Miami and Fort Lauderdale SDB Churches are collecting non-perishable food items, clothing, toiletries, and cash which will be sent as soon as relevant information is ascertained.
The Miami Church has 3 members who are of Haitian background and origin, and several others who are regular attenders. All of them have been affected in some way. One of our attenders has lost at least two cousins, one of whom was a 6-year old girl. This attender also knows someone who lost their home, who lives very close to where Pastor Julien's Church and school were.
Another attender's home that was in the town of Carrefour, the earthquake's epicenter, has been destroyed. For others, they have relatives missing.
The disaster is one of monumental proportions, but we have a Sovereign God, who is still in control.
****************************
From the Miami Church, our latest decision is that as soon as it is feasible, we will ship to Pastor Jean Lucas Julien and the people of the SDB Church in Haiti, several barrels of items (non-perishable food, clothing, toiletries) which we have collected. Then, I will lead a small team of 2-4 people from our Church down to Haiti to be on hand to help with the distribution of those items, and to give some hope and encouragement to them through extending the love of Jesus Christ.
